Bringing parents to Canada: super visa or visitor visa?
- Visas
- Family reunification
- Super visa
There are two usual ways to bring parents or grandparents to Canada for a long stay: the super visa and an ordinary visitor visa (TRV). Most people start by asking which is easier to get approved. The better first question is how long this visit is meant to be — a few months, or a few years.
The core differences
| Super visa | Visitor visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can apply | Only parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens, permanent residents and registered Indians | Any visitor |
| Stay per entry | Up to 5 years | Normally up to 6 months |
| Validity | Up to 10 years | Up to passport validity |
| Medical insurance | Mandatory, CAD $100,000 minimum | Not required |
| Host income | Must meet the minimum necessary income (LICO) | Not required |
In short: the super visa buys a long stay, and the price is stricter conditions — insurance, a medical exam, and a child or grandchild in Canada who can prove sufficient income.
Almost every refusal turns on one of two things
Insurance. At least CAD $100,000 in emergency medical coverage, including hospitalisation and repatriation, valid for at least one year from the date of entry, issued by a Canadian insurer or by a foreign insurer authorised by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) — and a foreign policy must carry a statement confirming the company was conducting insurance business in Canada when the policy was issued. Confirming the insurer qualifies before you pay is much cheaper than answering a document request later.
Income. The child or grandchild in Canada must meet the minimum necessary income (LICO). Only their spouse or common-law partner may co-sign the invitation and combine income — a sibling's or other relative's income cannot be counted.
What about parent sponsorship (PGP)?
These are not mutually exclusive. PGP leads to permanent residence and public health coverage, but intake is capped and allocated by lottery, so the wait is long and uncertain. A super visa is not immigration — parents remain visitors with no public health coverage, which is why private insurance is mandatory — but there is no cap on filing and the timeline is under your control.
In practice we often run both in parallel: get the super visa so the family is together now, and enter the PGP lottery at the same time.
When an ordinary visitor visa is the better choice
- the visit is genuinely short — a wedding, a new grandchild, a few months and back;
- the child in Canada does not yet meet LICO;
- the parent's health makes a compliant one-year insurance policy hard to obtain.
In those cases a visitor visa first is the realistic route, with a super visa later once the conditions are in place.
