Chinese Passports, Travel Documents and Visas for China
Last updated: 2026-09-17
Everything here starts with one question: are you currently a Chinese national or a foreign national? China does not recognise dual nationality, and the answer determines which document you can obtain. Chinese nationals apply for passports or travel documents; those who have become Canadian apply for a visa. One timing point matters: between February 17 and December 31, 2026, Canadian ordinary passport holders may enter China without a visa for up to 30 days. This page separates the three situations.
- Passport renewal
- Filed through the Chinese Consular app; around 15 working days, with no expedited service
- Travel document
- Express (3 working days) and urgent (2 working days) options exist
- Visa-free for Canadians
- February 17 to December 31, 2026, stays of up to 30 days
- Who it suits
- Chinese nationals in Canada, parents of children born here, and naturalised Canadians visiting China
Official processing times
These visas are decided by each country's missions in Canada, and there is no single published dataset. Below are the official pages where each one publishes its processing times and appointment information:

Processing times and appointment availability swing with the season; in peak periods (summer, year end) an appointment can be weeks or months out. The links above are the official pages — their published figures govern.
Three situations, three routes
Still a Chinese national: passport
- For passports with under a year of validity or nearly full visa pages
- And for lost, stolen or damaged passports
- Filed through the Chinese Consular app
- Production takes time and cannot be expedited
Children born abroad: travel document
- For Chinese nationals born abroad who hold a foreign passport
- Used to enter and leave China
- Express and urgent processing are available
- First applications need the birth certificate and the parents' identity and marital documents
Naturalised Canadians: a visa
- Once the Chinese passport is no longer valid, a visa is required
- Q1 and Q2 categories cover family visits
- Longer-validity arrangements exist for foreign nationals of Chinese descent
- Cancellation formalities for the former passport may apply
The 2026 visa-free window
- For Canadian citizens holding ordinary passports
- Entries between February 17 and December 31, 2026
- Stays of up to 30 days
- For business, tourism, visiting family and friends, and transit
Renewing or replacing a Chinese passport
The process moved online in 2021 and works differently from before.
- Grounds include under a year of validity, nearly exhausted visa pages, and loss, theft or damage
- The application starts in the Chinese Consular app for first-stage review
- Once the status changes to second-stage review, documents are submitted by mail or in person as directed
- From receipt of those documents to production, roughly 15 working days
- Passport production cannot be expedited, so start early if travel is planned
- A lost passport also requires reporting formalities and a fuller document set
Travel documents: the usual case for children born in Canada
Many children born in Canada are also treated as Chinese nationals, and they travel to China on a travel document rather than a Chinese passport.
- For Chinese nationals born abroad or holding a foreign passport
- The travel document is issued by the Chinese government for travel to and from China
- A first application usually needs the child's birth certificate, the parents' Chinese passports or identity documents, proof of marital status, and proof of status in Canada
- Whether the parents are settled abroad determines whether the child holds Chinese nationality, and therefore which document applies
- Travel documents expire and must be reapplied for
- Express processing (three working days after approval) and urgent processing (two working days) are available
Common visa categories for China
For applicants who now hold foreign nationality, the category follows the purpose of travel.
| Category | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Q1 | Long-term family reunion, generally over 180 days, with relatives who are Chinese nationals or permanent residents of China |
| Q2 | Short visits to relatives who are Chinese nationals or permanent residents of China |
| L | Tourism |
| M | Commercial and trade activities |
| S1 and S2 | Long or short visits to foreign nationals residing in China for work or study |
| Foreign nationals of Chinese descent | Longer-validity visa and residence arrangements exist, on terms set out in current notices |
Choosing the wrong category is a common reason for a file being returned. Note too that between February 17 and December 31, 2026 Canadian ordinary passport holders may enter visa-free for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits and transit — within that window a short trip usually needs no visa at all, while anyone outside it still applies in advance.
Consulate-General in Vancouver: visa-free policy notice →How it works
- 1
Establish nationality
Confirm whether you, or your child, are currently a Chinese or a foreign national. Everything else follows, and getting it wrong invalidates the whole file.
- 2
Identify the consular district
China maintains an embassy and several consulates-general in Canada, each covering a defined region, and applications go to the one for your address.
- 3
File online
Passports and travel documents start in the Chinese Consular app; visas follow the visa application service centre process.
- 4
Submit the second-stage documents
When the status changes, send or deliver the documents as directed. An incomplete set means starting again.
- 5
Wait for production
Passports take about 15 working days and cannot be rushed; travel documents can be expedited. Plan travel around the longest case.
- 6
Collect the document
By mail or in person, as chosen. Where a former passport must be cancelled, that is handled at the same time.
Common questions
My child was born in Canada — passport or travel document?+
If the child holds Chinese nationality but travels on a Canadian passport, the document for travel to China is a travel document, not a Chinese passport. Whether the child holds Chinese nationality depends on the parents: a child born abroad to one or two Chinese-national parents generally does, unless those parents are settled abroad and the child acquired foreign nationality at birth, in which case the child needs a visa instead. Whether the parents count as settled abroad is the deciding point, so confirm it before filing.
What happens to my Chinese passport after naturalising?+
Under the Nationality Law, a Chinese citizen settled abroad who voluntarily takes foreign nationality automatically loses Chinese nationality, and the passport can no longer be used. Travel to China then requires a visa, or falls within the visa-free window between February 17 and December 31, 2026 for up to 30 days. Cancellation formalities should be completed as the consulate directs — using two passports interchangeably creates serious problems in both countries.
Can a passport application be expedited?+
No. There is no express or urgent channel for passport production, which takes around 15 working days from receipt of the second-stage documents. Where travel is urgent and the circumstances qualify, a single-use emergency travel document may be possible, but the grounds are narrow. The safest approach is to start once validity drops below a year.
Do Canadians need a visa for China right now?+
Between February 17 and December 31, 2026, Canadian ordinary passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 30 days for business, tourism, visiting family and friends, and transit. Longer stays, or purposes outside that list such as work, study or residence, still require the appropriate visa. The policy has a stated end date, so check the current notice before travelling.
Can you handle these applications?+
We help identify the right status and document, confirm the consular district, prepare the document list, complete the forms and arrange submission. Passports, travel documents and Chinese visas are all decided by the Chinese embassy, consulates and their designated visa application service centres. Where nationality itself is in question, we will also suggest confirming directly with the consulate so that no time is lost on the wrong route.
